GippLab Showcases Research to DAAD President at NII Tokyo

GippLab members Dr. André Greiner-Petter and Dr. Timo Spinde had the honor of meeting Prof. Joybrato Mukherjee, President of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), during his visit to the National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Tokyo. During the meeting, our researchers presented their current research projects to highlight GippLab’s ongoing activities at the NII and the long-standing history of our successful collaboration.

The discussion, also attended by Prof. Shigeo Sugimoto, Acting Director-General of the NII, underscored the strong academic and cultural ties between German and Japanese research institutions. The DAAD President’s visit emphasized the significance and enduring success of this international partnership, which has been generously supported by the DAAD for over a decade.

Spektrum der Wissenschaft Highlights Our Research on the Future of Plagiarism Detection

How can science uphold integrity in an era where large language models (LLMs) can seamlessly disguise stolen ideas? The renowned journal Spektrum der Wissenschaft explores this question in its recent article “Das Katz-und-Maus-Spiel um die Redlichkeit” (“Cat-and-Mouse Game with Integrity”).

The piece features our latest research on tackling the evolving challenges of plagiarism detection in a digital world with unlimited access to AI tools. It highlights an interview with Dr. André Greiner-Petter, who shares insights from his research stay in Japan, where he is developing an artificial dataset of LLM-generated plagiarism. This pioneering work aims to uncover hidden risks and strengthen existing detection algorithms.

André Greiner-Petter reports from the Heidelberg Laureate Forum

Our group member, Dr. André Greiner-Petter was selected to visit the prestigious annual Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF). The HLF is a weeklong conference that gives young researchers the opportunity to connect with international research pioneers and Laureates from computer science and mathematics.

Through lectures, workshops, and in-person discussions, young researchers, like André, can meet with Turing Award winners, Field medalists, and Abel Prize winners, and researchers with other impressive research achievements. Summarizing the event, André said, “having the chance to personally chat with and discuss recent advances with Vinton Cerf – the father of the internet – or with Yann LeCun – the Godfather of AI – is truly special and inspiring”.

Andre also points out that the HLF is a one-of-a-kind networking event right at the intersection of computer science and mathematics, and that it brings together a wide range of junior researchers from Bachelor students to post docs from across the globe. “The average participant traveled over 6,000 km to come to the town of Heidelberg. Seeing the problems and approaches for solutions from other parts of the planet and in other fields puts the own research into a new perspective and sparks new ideas for my very own research topics”, he said.

The 9th HLF is taking place between Sept. 18th – 23rd, 2022 in Heidelberg, Germany.
