GippLab members Dr. André Greiner-Petter and Dr. Timo Spinde had the honor of meeting Prof. Joybrato Mukherjee, President of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), during his visit to the National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Tokyo. During the meeting, our researchers presented their current research projects to highlight GippLab’s ongoing activities at the NII and the long-standing history of our successful collaboration.

The discussion, also attended by Prof. Shigeo Sugimoto, Acting Director-General of the NII, underscored the strong academic and cultural ties between German and Japanese research institutions. The DAAD President’s visit emphasized the significance and enduring success of this international partnership, which has been generously supported by the DAAD for over a decade.

Our cooperation with the NII offers students and early-career researchers at the University of Göttingen unique opportunities for research stays in Tokyo. Details are available at https://gipplab.uni-goettingen.de/tokyo.

We are happy to announce that the DFG (German Research Foundation), has awarded our group a research grant for our project: “Analyzing Mathematics to Detect Disguised Academic Plagiarism”. The total funding sum of 633,000 Euro will be made available over a 3-year period to both Bela Gipp’s DKE Group at the University of Wuppertal and to Dr. Moritz Schubotz, a former DKE group member, now working at the FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz-Institute for Information Infrastructure. Significant earlier work carried out by Norman Meuschke and Corinna Breitinger has led to the realization of this DFG project.

The goal of this collaborative DFG-funded project will be to improve academic plagiarism detection methods for heavily disguised forms of plagiarism, including paraphrases, translations, or idea plagiarism. Our focus will be on texts and publications from the STEM-field, i.e. the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics domain, since texts from these domains contain valuable semantic information encoded in the form of mathematical expressions, which are not being considered by existing approaches for plagiarism detection. We will conduct fundamental research on analyzing mathematical expressions as text-independent and language-independent features to help identify potentially suspicious similarity among documents.

We plan to combine our novel mathematics-based approach to plagiarism detection with both text-based and citation-based detection approaches, which we have developed in previous research. During this project, the research team will thus collaborate closely with researchers from Bela Gipp’s other DFG-funded project “Methods and Tools to Advance the Retrieval of Mathematical Knowledge from Digital Libraries for Search-, Recommendation- and Assistance-Systems”.

As of January 9, Wikipedia allows semantically enhancing mathematical formulae with the definitions of the terms they contain. For example, the formula of the famous mass-energy equivalence E=mc² now contains information on the variables E, m, and c. Clicking on the formula opens an information page (see figure) that displays the meanings of the variables and links to additional specifications of the formula’s terms.

Our group members André-Greiner Petter and Moritz Schubotz developed this new feature as part of the research for the DFG grant GI 1259-1. The additional information on formulae is obtained from Wikidata – a central, language-independent Wikimedia database that can be edited by both humans and bots. To further improve the availability of mathematical semantics, we combine the power of artificial intelligence with the capabilities of humans to (semi-automatically) generate semantic markup for mathematics in Wikipedia. Please refer to the following publications for details and join the Wikimedia Math community group if you are interested in helping to improve math support in Wikipedia.

Wikipedia is using a new approach for rendering mathematical formulae – as of May 31st. This approach was developed by our group member Moritz Schubotz.

Bitmap images representing formulae, were replaced with a combination of MathML (the web standard for mathematics on the web), in addition to a fallback mechanism for browsers that do not support this web standard.

This approach makes formulae machine readable and accessible to users with limited vision, while also looking crisper on high resolution displays and in print.
