How can researchers explore millions of digitized texts when much of the data remains under copyright?
In this upcoming talk, Prof. J. Stephen Downie (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) will present new approaches to open cultural analytics through the HathiTrust Research Center’s TORCHLITE project.

When: April 30, 2026, 4:30 pm
Where: Historic Building of the State and University Library Göttingen (SUB), room 1.207
What:
The HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC) provides analytic access to 19 million volumes found in the HathiTrust Digital Library (HTDL). Roughly 10 million of the volumes in the collection are under copyright restrictions and cannot be freely shared with scholars. To provide more open access to HathiTrust’s materials, the HTRC has released its Extracted Features (EF) 2.5 Dataset, which contains over 3 trillion unigram tokens found on each of the 6 billion pages in the corpus.

Prof. Downie will provide a briefing update on the HTRC’s ongoing “Tools for Open Research and Computation with HathiTrust: Leveraging Intelligent Text Extraction” (TORCHLITE) project. Funded by the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH), TORCHLITE strives to create easy-to-use text analysis tools, dashboards, and application programming interfaces (APIs) to facilitate open cultural analytics research using the uniquely valuable HTDL data. The talk will highlight motivations, challenges, and accomplishments of the TORCHLITE to date, along with its upcoming next steps that envision the creation of an international consortium of similar groups, tentatively called the “International Consortium for Open Cultural Analytics,” which is designed to encourage Extracted Feature access to otherwise closed collections. The talk will conclude with a conversation about the upcoming sunsetting of HTRC and the role that EF will play in continuing the work of the HTRC team and other digital humanities scholars.

Speaker:
J. Stephen Downie is a professor and the Executive Associate Dean at the School of Information Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also the Illinois Co-Director of the HathiTrust Research Center. Professor Downie conducts work in Digital Libraries, Digital Humanities and Music Information Retrieval. He holds degrees from the University of Western Ontario, including a BA (music theory and composition), a Master’s of Library and Information Science (MLIS), and a PhD in Library and Information Science.

How can we use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to fundamentally simplify researchers’ access to scientific information? Our research group, the Lower Saxony State and University Library Göttingen (SUB), and the Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen (GWDG) aim to develop a virtual assistant based on large language models that will make library research easier.

The collaborative project LibraryAI is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with more than one million euros for three years, starting in December 2025.

The virtual research assistant will enable users to “interact” with the library via chat: asking questions, summarizing or translating content, and navigating through complex source collections. The special feature is that the assistant not only responds quickly and accurately, but also understands scientific terminology, thanks to customized AI models trained explicitly for the context of libraries and research.

“LibraryAI will not be a generic chatbot, but a reliable companion in everyday research – tailored to the needs of scientific users,” says principal investigator Prof. Dr. Bela Gipp, deputy director of SUB and head of our research group. The AI will be closely integrated with the existing library systems at SUB Göttingen, allowing it to access current catalog data, full texts, and subject-specific resources without inheriting the typical weaknesses of generative AI, such as outdated content or incorrect statements.

The system is based on a modular, open architecture and will be developed so that other scientific libraries can adopt it. “With our project, we aim to make an important contribution to the digital transformation of library services in Germany,” says Gipp.

We are thrilled to announce that the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action has approved funding for a 30-month collaborative research project with our longstanding industry partner, eschbach, under the Central Innovation Program for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (ZIM).

The newly funded project aims to develop advanced AI-driven multilingual search and recommendation algorithms tailored to handle the process industry’s unique terminology and language conventions. The enhanced AI capabilities will significantly elevate the Smart Search functionality of eschbach’s flagship product, Shiftconnector, by enabling seamless searches and recommendations across multiple languages. This innovation is particularly vital for global organizations utilizing Shiftconnector in production facilities worldwide.

eschbach and GippLab have collaborated successfully on research and development projects since 2015. Our joint efforts won multiple prestigious awards for product improvements and benefited the research community. This newly secured grant will mark a new chapter in our collaboration, supporting critical research, data science, and software development roles at both eschbach and GippLab.

Please visit this page to learn more about our fruitful research collaboration with eschbach.
